Basic Facts And FAQs
Why Are We Called River’s Cross?
Read why here.
When and where does River’s Cross Meet?
10:00am at the MOSAIC, 28 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA. We meet in the
inside the Livingstone Monastery (MAP). Follow the signs as you come through the entrance to the Mosaic. Sunday School for the children is a shared ministry with Hope Church on campus (hand out for parents and paging system).
What Does River’s Cross Believe?
You can find our core beliefs here.
What Kind of Church Is River’s Cross?
We are an Anglican church. If you are not familiar with what Anglican is, we are part of a worldwide community of over 70 million Christians with churches on every continent (except Antarctica!). We trace our historical roots to England and the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century. You can read more about our affiliation here.
Do We Use A Lot Of Formalities – Like Readings And Such?
We use a combination of what might be called ancient and future. Some material from the Book of Common Prayer, a few common prayers like the Lord's Prayer, our pastor does wear robes, our worship is contemporary with piano and guitar and we are fairly informal in terms of liturgy (service) or dress. All is very easy to follow using power point projection.
Are We Charismatic?
If you mean, are we 'scary, out of control or force things on people?' then absolutely not. If you mean, 'do we believe that the Spirit is still healing, moving, and working throughout the Body of Christ?', then yes. We believe everything that the Holy Spirit does will be done in an orderly way (I Corinthians 14:40), will be done as Jesus wants it (John 14:12 "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father") and will be done in a way that is sensitive, permissive, and brings a sense that God is working.
Opportunities To Learn More And Connect
Every Sunday most stay for lunch together after the service. We also have a Wednesday evening group to learn and grow together (6:30 – 8:00pm). During the Summer there is a woman’s study group on Thursdays from 11:00am till noon. Many of us meet to have lunch together at the Livingstone Monastery every Thursday (it’s free). Also check out Opportunities to Serve for an excellent way to learn about River’s Cross, meet staff, and other newcomers. This information will be announced on Sunday mornings and via the website events calendar.
