What's In a Name?
River’s Cross Church is located in the City of Newport News, VA. Newport News is a long, narrow city stretching along the shores of the James River. It is roughly half way between Cape Henry, the site of the First Landing where the Jamestown colonists with their Anglican chaplain Robert Hunt, planted a wooden cross in 1607 and consecrated the North American continent to the glory of God, and Jamestown Island; site of the first Anglican Church in the New World from which we are directly and spiritually descended.
The river, the mighty James, defines the business character of the city in which we live. Starting at Newport News Point with the commercial piers for containers and coal, and Northrup Grumman Shipyard, on up the river past the moorings of fishing boats to Fort Eustis, home of the Army Transportation Command; the river is indeed the commercial life’s blood of the community.
As the James River is the commercial heart of our city, the spiritual river has been described as three streams of humanity – body, mind, and soul. All three of the streams of our lives interact. When one is in disarray, it will affect the others. In the Anglican Mission in America (AMiA) of which we are a part, the River is described as the three streams of, the Scripture, the Sacred, and the Spirit; three streams flowing from one river – Jesus Christ; it is His Gospel that we are called to proclaim. In both views, we believe the three streams together provide a balanced blend of the Christian faith as taught in the one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
Ministry to the body, mind and soul is found in the Scripture, the Sacred and the Spirit. We exemplify this ministry in our discipleship, worship, congregational life and outreach. We at River’s Cross believe that harmony of all three streams can only be found in the triune God - God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Thus we have planted our cross on the banks of the River, and pray that all who pass by will join us in worshiping and serving the one true God. Chaplain Robert Hunt prayed that the Gospel of Jesus Christ would go out across this land and from this land flow to the nations of the world. We at River’s Cross continue to minister in the spirit of the First Landing.
